Rock The Bells · Aug 27, 2021 · published to YouTube
In August 2021, the Smithsonian Institute’s National Museum of African American History and Culture, along with Folkways Records, dropped the first of its kind Smithsonian Anthology of Hip Hop and Rap. The 300-page, 9-disc set features a list of over 100 songs curated by leaders of the culture, in a definitive move to cement Hip Hop’s legacy in American History, and fully realize it’s contribution to shifting American culture. To celebrate the launch, Rock the Bells curated a panel of some of the main brokers of this project to talk about what this means for the Smithsonian’s efforts to feature more diverse stories, what it means for Hip Hop to be centered in a very real way in these types of institutions, and how the decades-long process came to be. #SmithsonianHipHop #RockTheBells Panel: Moderated by Dr. Dwan Reece LL COOL J Chuck D MC LYTE Cey Adams Secretary Lonnie Bunch III LI
